A White Christmas Weekend...

9:17 am - 32 degrees - snowing...

It was a white Christmas weekend full of family and friends, and it even snowed on Christmas Day.  Love this time of year!

Tony and I have been very fortunate in the fact that we get to spend Christmas with both of our families every year.  My family has always celebrated on Christmas Eve and Tony’s has always celebrated on Christmas Day.  Perfect!

Now that the holiday weekend is over, it’s back to work we go.  While the kids have been on Christmas break, they have gotten quite a bit of sledding time in.  They’re currently waiting for the cinnamon rolls to finish baking before they head back outside and jump back on the sleds.

Snow Report:  We currently have about 6 inches of new snow from last night with an overall depth of anywhere from 1 foot to 4 feet depending on where you’re at, and more snow is on its way.

Red The Elf...

7:11 pm - 38 degrees - calm night...

Last night we got our Christmas tree up just in time... Red the Elf is back for another 24 days full of Christmas shenanigans!

By the way, that's a noble fir.  It's the only kind of Christmas tree Tony believes in, so that's the kind of tree we get every single year.

Making Holiday Wreaths...

11:44 am - 31 degrees - overcast...

Every year after Thanksgiving I make a number of lush, full, fresh Christmas wreaths for family and friends.  Whether on the front door or above the mantle, few things convey the holidays better than a fresh wreath.

This weekend while Tony and Caitlyn went out searching for the perfect Christmas tree, Jack and I wandered around the property in search of greenery for our Christmas wreaths.  We found noble to use for the base greenery with some hemlock and cedar for accents.

Bagging up our Noble Fir cuttings.
I cut everything into around 6"-7" or around 10"-11" cuttings.
Different size cuttings make different size wreaths.
Both wreaths are on an 18" frame.
The wreath on the left is made up of 6"-7" cuttings.
The wreath on the right is made up of 10"-11" cuttings.

I think mixing different kinds of greenery creates a beautiful textured look that just adds a little something.  I will use whatever greenery is available around the property like noble, cedar, salal, or hemlock, and sometimes we’ll get some cuttings from our parents’ homes.  I’ve used arborvitae cuttings from my parent’s and we’ve taken holly cuttings from Tony’s parents.  We just use whatever is available.

Before I start making wreaths the first thing I do is get organized - I cover the dining table in a heavy plastic, get out all the tools and supplies I am going to need like the wreath frames, wire, wire snips and hand pruners, and I set aside my piles of greenery.

When I’m ready to make the wreath, I lay the wire frame in the center of the table and secure one end of the wire to the frame.  I then gather up greenery cuttings, usually around 10-12 pieces layered in whatever order I think looks good – a few cuttings of noble, then a hemlock, then another couple nobles, topped off with a cedar or two.  Lay the bundle onto the frame and wrap the bottom inch in wire a few times to secure it to the frame.

I continue to gather, bundle and wrap until the whole frame is full.  Then I will work my way back around the wreath gently spreading the bundles out a bit and tucking in an extra piece of greenery here or there if I see an area that is a little thin.

After the wreath is looking nice and full, I will add a few small embellishments like red ilex berries or small pinecones just to add some festive color and more texture.  I prefer simplistic wreaths decorated by nature’s embellishments whereas others prefer adding bows, ornaments or other decorations.

After all the greenery, nature's embellishments and decorations have been added, it’s time to add the hanger.  One way is to use a piece of wire that I twist and form into a loop, then attach to the back to be used as a hook.

Another way is to cut about 1 ½ yards of ribbon, wrapped the two ends of ribbon around the frame about 8”-10” apart from each other, then stapled each individual ribbon end together to secure the ribbon to the frame.  Then cut the ribbon in half at the top of the loop and tie a bow with the two ends.

This full, lush wreath will make the perfect greeting hung on your front door.

Fireworks On The Beach...

9:36 pm - 76 degrees - light scattered cloud layer...

We decided to leave the mountain for the Fourth of July holiday and took a road trip to the Long Beach Peninsula.  Wow!  If you live in the Pacific Northwest, you have not experienced the Fourth of July until you’ve hit the Long Beach Peninsula on the Washington coast.  This is one of those has-to-be-seen-to-be-believed events and WOW! was it ever impressive!

Just imagine 28 miles of uninterrupted beach where people park 2, 3, 4 rows deep, grilling on their BBQ’s, sitting around bonfires, and letting loose with thousands of dollars worth of good old fireworks – mortars, roman candles, rockets, a 12 foot burning man made out of firecrackers!  It seems they’re all okay to use at the beach! Wow!

We went down to the beach at noon and people were already staking their
claim and getting set-up for the evenings festivities.

This was just one of the huge sections of beach that a group
had marked off for their own firework display.

This particular display even had a 12 foot tall
burning man made out of firecrackers!

Long Beach Parks & Rec Department estimated around 300,000 people
were there to enjoy the fireworks show on the beach!

As soon as the sun set, the city of Long Beach started the evening off with the their main event, an impressive $15,000 - $20,000 display in front of the Long Beach Boardwalk.  Then the beach turned into a free-for-all - a wild and crazy night where each person was trying to out-do the guy next to him and the results were AMAZING!

We went back down to the beach just after 7pm to find a spot.  Our little guy
was very excited and couldn't wait for the fireworks to start!

Sunset on the beach and then....

...the fireworks began!

The kids finally settled down as the awesome light show continued on!

After the smoke has settled and the last firework has been set off, what’s left is thousands and thousands of dollars worth of paper packaging and cardboard tubes.

What makes this Fourth of July event special is the huge volunteer beach clean-up that happens the next morning.  Large dumpsters are located at all the beach entrances so people can throw out their own garbage that night.  Then the next morning hundreds of volunteers and community groups organize clean-up schedules to pick up all the remaining debris.  By noon, there’s very little left of what happened just over 12 hours earlier.

This was the first time we have gone to the beach for the Fourth of July holiday and it was definitely worth it!

Happy St. Valentine's Day...

4:02 pm - 44 degrees - overcast...

I am a romantic at heart, and even though I believe you should show and tell that special someone all year long how much they are loved and appreciated, Valentine’s Day is a good reminder (in case you’ve been a little too busy) for a little show and tell.
