Mottled Java...

Mottled Java is a critically endangered old dual-purpose breed of chicken that was developed in America early settlers. Its ancestors were reputed to have come from the Far East, possibly from the isle of Java in Indonesia. They are the second oldest American breed, first being the Dominique. Sources differ on the time of origin of the Java, but the breed was known to be in existence in America sometime between 1835 and 1850.

The Java was used as a foundation to develop many American breeds, including popular favorites like the Rhode Island Red, Plymouth Rock, and Jersey Giant, all of which overshadowed the Java in popularity.
