Barred Plymouth Rock...

Barred Plymouth Rocks are one of the most popular dual-purpose chicken breeds on small farms today. This Heritage Breed was developed in New England in the early 1800s by crossing Dominiques and Black Javas. Since then, the breed has spread to every part of the U.S., and is an ideal chicken.

Barred Rocks are very friendly and do well in cold weather. They also have high egg production, meaty body, a docile personality, and good hardiness, all characteristics that are desired in a great flock.

Like the Faverolles, this is another breed whose males are often enthusiastically recommended as good roosters for the home flock, as they tend to be calm and kind in comparison to some breeds of roosters. Both roosters and hens are very pretty with feathers decorated in alternating bars of white and black, and set off by their bright, alert eyes.
